Shooting in Tennessee Park Claims Life of One Student
A shooting incident in a Tennessee park on Friday night resulted in the death of one student and left four others injured. This tragic event occurred as teenagers gathered for pre-prom photos in Brownsville, roughly 90 miles northeast of Memphis.
Authorities arrived at the scene, located on Key Corner Street at Webb Banks Passive Park, and discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. All were transported to nearby hospitals, though sadly, one was later pronounced dead, according to a spokesperson from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
“Special agents are collaborating with the Brownsville Police Department to investigate what appears to be a homicide involving multiple victims,” the spokesperson explained.
Witnesses reported that the park was bustling with over a hundred students and many vehicles for a photo shoot just before the shooting erupted. Emergency services reacted quickly, reaching the location within minutes.
Details about possible suspects or motives remain unclear at this time.
Tragically, the victim has been identified as Satula Hayes, a student from Haywood County Schools. In light of the incident, classes will be canceled on Monday to allow students, faculty, and families time to mourn. The school also indicated that the prom was cut short due to the shooting.
The district released a statement expressing their sorrow, stating, “Satula was a diligent student with a bright future ahead of her, and it’s heartbreaking to see those dreams cut short.” They extended their condolences to her family during this incredibly difficult time.
Haywood County Sheriff Billy Garrett Jr. referred to the shooting as a “senseless, tragic event” that shattered what should have been a joyful celebration. He pledged to dedicate all necessary resources to ensure justice for the grieving family.
Brownsville Mayor William D. Rawls also shared his condolences, describing the shooting as “senseless and heartbreaking.” He offered thoughts and prayers to the families affected and reassured the community that they stand together during this tough period.
