Death of Former Youth Pastor in Custody Under Investigation

David Vander Meer, a former youth pastor and yoga instructor based in Las Vegas, has died in custody just days after federal marshals arrested him on suspicion of killing his wife.

According to reports, Vander Meer passed away ahead of a scheduled court hearing, and his death is currently under investigation, as noted by the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that a 49-year-old male inmate at the Clark County Detention Center was transported to University Medical Center for treatment of self-inflicted injuries. However, the police did not release the inmate’s identity prior to his death.

Police confirmed that this inmate had been in custody since June 22 and was wanted in connection with a case from another state. The coroner is expected to provide details about his name and cause of death.

Charges Related to Wife’s Death

Vander Meer faced charges of murdering his wife, Bernadette Vander Meer. She died in 2006 during a hike in Utah’s Zion National Park, where her death was initially ruled an accident related to a fall.

Interestingly, the case was closed for about 20 years but was reopened in 2025 due to questions surrounding the circumstances of her death.

The affidavit reveals that the senior pastor from Vander Meer’s church had alerted authorities, expressing doubts about the accidental nature of Bernadette’s death.

I’ve often thought about how tragic it is when someone loses their life in such a chaotic way. It leaves so many unanswered questions.

Vander Meer’s arrest earlier this week included charges not only of murder but also insurance fraud, following an extensive investigation.

He was set to appear in court Thursday morning when he was pronounced dead. Reports indicate that Vander Meer was being held in the Clark County Detention Center and was awaiting extradition to Utah.
