Chargers Aim to Maximize Justin Herbert’s Potential
When Mike McDaniel took on the role of offensive coordinator for the Chargers, a key focus was clearly on how to best utilize quarterback Justin Herbert’s skills.
“He’s capable of using every tool available to him,” McDaniel, who previously coached in Miami, remarked about Herbert. “It’s clear to everyone around him that he’s playing the best football of his career, and that’s a significant achievement for him.”
To fully harness Herbert’s talent, the Chargers have opted to surround him with more offensive weapons.
In a recent announcement, the team confirmed they have signed former Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku to a one-year deal that could be worth as much as $8 million.
Njoku has been with the Cleveland Browns for his entire nine-year career, where he experienced a significant breakout last season, recording 81 receptions for 882 yards and six touchdowns on 123 targets. Those numbers marked career highs for him, earning him a spot in the 2023 Pro Bowl.
Interestingly, he ranks second in the Browns’ history for both total touchdown receptions (34) and total receptions (384).
The Chargers now have Njoku paired with second-year player Olondo Gadsden II, which should give Herbert an impressive array of options. Gadsden, a former fifth-round draft choice, had a solid rookie year with 49 catches for 664 yards and three touchdowns.
With McDaniel at the helm, there are high hopes that Herbert will elevate his performance even further, though there’s an awareness of not overwhelming him.
McDaniel noted, “He possesses a powerful arm and has impressive ball speed, which means he typically has to wait for plays to develop before throwing. But during those brief moments, defenders close in on the receiver, limiting yards after the catch.”
“So, the focus is on leveraging that strong arm while incorporating quick footwork. It’s just one aspect of the offensive scheme, but it’s something I’ve noticed he hasn’t fully explored before. That’s what really stood out to me.”
