London Mayor Accuses Trump of Obsession
London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan, has criticized President Donald Trump, suggesting that he is somewhat “infatuated” with him as Khan marks a decade in office. He provocatively asked whether Trump harbors any “interest” or “admiration” for him.
Trump, known for his harsh views on Khan, has labeled him one of the worst mayors globally during a September interview, highlighting concerns over the impact of Khan’s policies on London’s residents.
Interestingly, while it may seem Trump is more interested in Khan, the reverse appears true as well. Over the years, Khan has dedicated considerable time to criticizing Trump and his administration, accusing him of various forms of discrimination, including racism and Islamophobia.
In a recent interview with a local magazine, The Big Issue, to celebrate his ten-year mayoral anniversary, Khan reflected on his ongoing feud with Trump. He humorously claimed that Trump is living “rent free” in his head and dismissed Trump’s interest as “ridiculous.”
“Perhaps he likes me, but I don’t know. President Trump, I’m happily married! I’m not interested,” Khan remarked.
Khan characterized his leadership as the “antithesis” of Trump’s beliefs, portraying London as “progressive” and “multicultural,” while labeling Trump as xenophobic and promoting a vision of “mononationalism.” He pointed out that Londoners elected a Muslim mayor, suggesting Trump’s narrative about London is misleading.
Khan further accused Trump of introducing racist language and objectifying women into mainstream discourse, yet he did not back his claims with evidence.
“So the P-word is back. The N-word is back. The Y-word is back. And women are now being told by men what to do with their bodies. I could go on and on. And it’s a problem for all of us,” Khan asserted.
Reflecting on his tenure, Khan noted the significant changes in British leadership, emphasizing that he aims to be London’s voice rather than merely aligning with the Labor party. He expressed frustration over financial constraints and the challenges stemming from the previous government.
Khan has also found himself at odds with the British government on several issues, including potential re-engagement with the EU and taking a stronger stance regarding Gaza. While he disagrees with the Labor government on various topics, he appreciated Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer’s stance against Trump regarding Iran.
Last month, during a United Nations General Assembly speech, Trump targeted Khan, warning about potential imposition of sharia law in London. Khan fired back, calling Trump a bigot and asserting that London remains “the greatest city in the world” and safer than many US cities.
In a December interview, Trump reiterated his criticism, labeling Khan a “disaster” and arguing that his tenure stems from Britain’s immigration policies. He lamented the changes in London, expressing concern over its direction.
