Magic Johnson Praises Mayor Karen Bass

On Sunday, former basketball star Magic Johnson commended Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for her work in office, describing her efforts as “great.” In a video he shared, he mentioned that part of his motivation for joining her reelection campaign in 2026 was to reconnect after nearly 30 years. He highlighted some of the mayor’s significant achievements and expressed his enthusiasm for her seeking a second term. “I’m looking forward to being able to say that,” he added.

In the video, Johnson acknowledged the challenges Bass faces and expressed appreciation for her dedication: “You’ve taken on a tough job here and done a great job. We all appreciate your efforts and what you’re doing. We look forward to helping you continue your mission and what you have in store – the vision for the city.”

Bass responded by reflecting on their long friendship, which spans over three decades. “His belief that I would change Los Angeles means everything to me,” she said, noting that Johnson has been deeply invested in the community through various initiatives, even before he was officially asked to do so. “I am very honored to have his support,” she remarked.

However, not everyone shared Johnson’s enthusiasm. Richard Grenell, the Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions, openly criticized Johnson’s support for Bass, calling it “too pathetic.” He questioned the wisdom behind supporting Bass due to their friendship, implying it was a selfish act given the state of the city.

In addition, Johnson had previously endorsed Bass during the 2022 mayoral race. He is known for his investments in Los Angeles, having owned several luxury properties throughout the area.

Bass’s administration has faced scrutiny, particularly regarding its response during the devastating wildfires in January 2025, which led to the evacuation of around 200,000 residents. The city is also grappling with a significant homelessness crisis, with 75,000 homeless individuals reported in Los Angeles County as of 2023, making it one of the most pressing issues in the area.

A public opinion poll from UCLA’s Luskin School of Public Affairs revealed that about 40% of potential voters are undecided ahead of the June 2 mayoral primary. In the current standings, Bass leads with 25% support, followed by reality TV star Spencer Pratt at 11%, and City Council member Nitya Raman at 9%. Other candidates, including tech entrepreneur Adam Miller and housing advocate Lei Huang, garnered 3% each, while the remaining voters indicated support for different candidates.
