Karen Bass Exits Mayoral Forum After Being Held Accountable for Poor LA Wildfire Response

Los Angeles Mayor Withdraws from Televised Debate

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has decided not to participate in an upcoming televised mayoral debate, which has led to some criticism from organizers, as announced on Saturday.

Bass, who is seeking re-election, was initially among four candidates who confirmed their participation in the Mayor’s Forum set for May 13. The event is set to be broadcasted on FOX 11, with collaboration from the League of Women Voters of Greater Los Angeles and the Pat Brown Public Affairs Institute. According to her spokeswoman, Alex Stack, Bass opted to visit Sacramento to promote issues related to housing, homelessness, and funding for recovery in Palisades.

The decision has stirred disappointment among the debate organizers. “Mayor Bass’ withdrawal is disheartening,” they noted, emphasizing that public forums are crucial for democratic accountability. Such events provide voters a chance to hear from candidates, ask questions, and discuss issues relevant to Los Angeles.

Mike Bonin, a former City Councilman and director of the Pat Brown Institute, pointed out that Bass had initially confirmed her presence. “It’s important to note that she chose this date, and other candidates adjusted their plans to accommodate her,” he texted to the media.

“This forum was crafted to give voters a direct line to those leading our city during challenging times,” said the organizers.

They maintained their commitment to fostering real engagement opportunities for voters with those vying for public office.

The other three candidates who accepted the debate invitation include City Councilor Nitya Raman, businessman Adam Miller, and community activist Lei Huang.

Spencer Pratt, a reality TV star and fifth candidate, also declined the invitation, citing scheduling conflicts. Pratt has previously criticized Bass regarding her management during the January 2025 wildfires in a prior televised debate. While Bass defended herself against her opponents, viewers reportedly voted Pratt as the debate’s winner.

During the wildfires, Bass faced significant scrutiny for traveling to Ghana as the crisis escalated, implementing budget cuts for the Los Angeles Fire Department, and reducing pay for employees at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Some fire hydrants malfunctioned during this critical period, prompting public calls for her resignation.

Former LAFD Chief Christine Crowley stated four days after the wildfire began that these budget cuts had hindered their emergency response. After just six weeks, Bass dismissed her from her position, highlighting that 1,000 firefighters were not deployed to tackle the flames under Crowley’s command, and the latter neglected to complete an action report regarding the fire.
