San Diego Padres Pitcher Arrested for Immigration Offense
Humberto Cruz, a young pitcher for the San Diego Padres, was recently arrested in Arizona on allegations related to immigration violations.
The 19-year-old, originally from Monterrey, Mexico, is currently marked as “restricted” on the minor league’s official roster. This status followed his voluntary return to Mexico last October after facing criminal charges.
Cruz had been recognized as the Padres’ fifth-best prospect according to recent rankings, but those details seem to have since been removed from available lists.
After facing felony charges for transporting an undocumented immigrant for commercial gain, Cruz has reportedly exited the U.S. He also faces a misdemeanor charge concerning illegal entry.
On October 28, Border Patrol agents in Lukeville, Arizona, found Cruz in a 2020 BMW SUV bearing Mexican license plates. Initially, he was seen with one male passenger, but an hour later, agents spotted the vehicle with multiple individuals.
Although Cruz had entered the country legally via Phoenix, it was alleged that he transported two undocumented persons, one of whom had been deported just four days prior.
Cruz later waived his rights and allegedly told authorities he responded to a social media post looking for individuals to earn “easy money.”
He claimed he’d been offered $1,000 for each pickup, with locations provided to him over the phone by an unidentified person. It was reported that Cruz acknowledged he realized the ride was “illegal” during his travels between Tucson and Phoenix.
In February 2024, Cruz was given a $750,000 signing bonus from the Padres organization.
As part of a plea agreement, the government will drop the felony count, which could have resulted in up to 10 years in prison. However, the misdemeanor charge could still lead to deportation, and Cruz has opted to accept the charges while voluntarily leaving the country.
Despite losing his 10-year work visa, he may apply for a new visa in five years depending on his behavior, according to reports.
In a statement released through the Padres, Cruz expressed deep regret over his actions, acknowledging that he failed to meet professional standards. He took responsibility for the impact his decisions had on his teammates and vowed to learn from this experience, promising to cooperate with the organization moving forward.
