Teen Arrests in Florida “Takeover Incident”

Authorities have reported that a suspect as young as 12 years old was arrested in a recent violent “teen takeover incident” in Florida. This event unfolded in the Curtis Hixson Park area of Tampa.

On Friday night, police took 22 individuals into custody, highlighting that this gathering led to “significant disruptions, fights, and other issues within the park.” The police chief emphasized the potential long-term consequences of their actions, noting that “the poor decisions” made could echo in their adult lives.

Charges for the arrested individuals ranged widely. Some are facing accusations of assault, drug possession, resisting arrest, and illegal weapon possession. Law enforcement also seized two firearms and a vehicle linked to the fray, with the incident classified under state law as a first-degree misdemeanor for public fighting and creating terror among the public.

The police response included patrol officers, bicycle units, and even Air Force personnel. They mentioned seeing reactions captured on video, which showcased the chaotic scenes.

Here’s a breakdown of some individuals apprehended:

  • 12 years old: Afrey
  • 13 years old (female): Afrey
  • 13 years old (male): verbal abuse, controlled substance possession, drug possession
  • 14 years old (male): Afrey
  • 15 years old (male): Afrey
  • 16 years old (male): Afrey
  • 17 years old (male): obstruction of highway traffic, controlled substance possession
  • Rodrico Boyd, 18 (male): drug paraphernalia possession
  • Don McAllister, 20 (male): possession of marijuana and a weapon
  • Michael Ashford, 20 (male): fleeing from police

Body camera footage displayed officers confronting a large group involved in disturbances, with other officers filming the upheaval on their phones. Aerial video further detailed the extent of the violence.

Police Chief Lee Varcoe stated, “This type of reckless and criminal behavior will not be tolerated in our city.” He added that what began as a large gathering quickly spiraled into chaos, putting others at risk. He urged parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts and companions, lamenting that the decisions these young people made meant they would lose certain opportunities in adulthood.

Interestingly, just last month, a similar event occurred in Orlando at Icon Park, where over 1,000 teenagers converged, resulting in injuries to a sheriff’s deputy.

The Tampa Police Department expressed that, with summer on the horizon, the growing trend of “takeovers” poses concerns not just for their city but for communities across the United States.
