PWHL delays playoff game due to health worries — does not mention hantavirus

The PWHL has decided to postpone playoff games because of concerns about player safety related to illness.

Originally, Game 5 of the semifinal series between the Minnesota Frost and Montreal Victoire was set for Monday as a decisive matchup, but now it will need to be rescheduled.

A statement from the PWHL revealed that a medical assessment indicated that the symptoms observed were “not consistent” with hantavirus; however, they did not specify who was unwell.

“This decision was made following discussions with medical professionals and emphasizes the league’s commitment to the health and well-being of all involved, including players, fans, staff, and competition personnel,” the PWHL noted. “We’ll announce a new date once medical guidance suggests it’s appropriate to resume playing. Fans can expect updates within the next day.”

The Associated Press has reported that the illness appears to have been limited to the Montreal team, mentioning that at least five players from the Victoire are affected.

With the series now tied at two games each, both teams will vie for a chance to face the Ottawa Charge in the Walter Cup final. Interestingly, the Frost previously clinched the PWHL title in the first two years of the league.

This postponement could create scheduling challenges for the PWHL as they need to find a suitable time for Game 5. Place Bell has availability on Tuesday and Wednesday, but it’s uncertain whether they’ll want to schedule during the same days that the Montreal Canadiens are in action against the Buffalo Sabers at the Bell Center.

The league had previously announced that Games 3 and 4 of the Walter Cup Final are set for May 18 and 20; however, that schedule may shift due to these recent developments.
