San Diego Padres Prospect Humberto Cruz Pleads Guilty

Humberto Cruz, a promising pitching prospect for the San Diego Padres, has reportedly pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge related to transporting illegal aliens and has chosen to voluntarily return to Mexico.

At just 19, Cruz was considered the fifth-best prospect in the Padres’ ranks. According to local reports, he responded to a social media advertisement looking for drivers to transport people for what was described as “easy money.”

He admitted that he was offered $1,000 for each person, fully aware that they were residing in the country illegally. While Cruz originally entered the United States on a work visa, this conviction is likely to trigger deportation proceedings and could significantly affect his future in baseball.

Experts and team officials suggest that Cruz might face a ban from reapplying for a U.S. work visa for a decade, though he could potentially seek reinstatement after five years if he maintains good behavior during that time.

The legal issues stem from an incident in October 2025, when authorities in Lukeville, Arizona, detained him on suspicions of transporting illegal aliens. After entering his guilty plea, he received a 30-day jail sentence, which was considered served due to the time he had already completed in custody.

In a heartfelt statement through the Padres organization, Cruz expressed deep regret for his choices and apologized for the negative impact on those around him.

“To my teammates, organization, fans, and family, I sincerely regret my poor judgment that let down many people I respect,” he said. “I know my actions did not meet the expected standards of a professional.” He went on to take responsibility and acknowledged the disappointment he caused.

“To my teammates and coaches, I apologize for this distraction,” he continued. “To my fans, I’m sorry for not living up to your expectations. Your support means so much, and I regret not honoring it.” He expressed gratitude to his family for their support during this challenging time.

“I recognize the stress this situation has caused, and I’m committed to learning from this moment and moving forward responsibly,” he added.

The Padres initially signed Cruz in February 2024, giving him a $750,000 signing bonus. His journey faced a significant setback when he underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2025. At the time of his arrest, he was rehabilitating from that surgery at the Padres’ spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona.
