Nicolás Maduro and Sandro Castro Share Messages for Mother's Day

Nicolás Maduro, the ousted socialist leader of Venezuela, and Sandro Castro, grandson of Fidel Castro, posted messages in honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday.

At the time of reporting, it wasn’t clear how Maduro, who is jailed in New York facing drug-terrorism charges, managed to share his Mother’s Day message on social media. In his note addressed to “all mothers in Venezuela and the world,” Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, expressed their “love, respect and gratitude,” celebrating mothers’ strength, loyalty, and creativity. They encouraged reading 1 John 5:14-15 from the Bible, being hopeful for “peace, unity, and happiness for our homeland.”

“Syria and I congratulate you and embrace you with eternal determination,” the message continued, thanking mothers globally for their unwavering support.

Maduro labeled himself “Constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,” despite maintaining power through questionable elections that featured only select opponents.

His Mother’s Day greeting came shortly after the Venezuelan government confirmed to Maduro’s 82-year-old mother, Carmen Teresa Navas, that her son, Victor Hugo Quero Navas, had died in 2025. She had been searching for her son, who went missing in January 2025, after being detained as a political prisoner.

Maduro’s regime is often criticized for manipulating religion to fit its agenda, and he released a similar earlier message calling for “peace and reconciliation” amidst years of oppression in Venezuela.

Meanwhile, Sandro Castro, self-identified as a “filmmaker” and “digital creator,” shared his own content for Mother’s Day.

The narrative included Castro “burning” cans of Cristal beer, a brand that, due to decades of poor management under the Castro regime, is now considered subpar. He has incorporated this beer into his personal brand.

In his skits, Castro interacts with “Magnolia,” a recurring character represented by a plastic hand resembling a figure from the Addams Family, humorously discussing his mother’s dislike for grilled beer, necessitating a pizza trip.

The sketch transitions to a Cuban pizzeria, where Castro declines to pay in cash, instead offering a wad of what he claims are old pesos. Amid a “heated” debate, he says he wishes to visit Hawaii but must deliver Hawaiian pizza to his mother.

He ultimately brings pizza and rum to “his mother,” who affectionately calls him “the sultan, the light of my life,” in a light-hearted jab at the ongoing electricity issues faced by many Cubans. She playfully refuses the pizza and swats at him with her sandal.

At the end, Castro holds up a sign reading “The Bl*wj*b” and says he escaped a situation with “Tomasa, who was acting like a real beast,” concluding with well-wishes to mothers everywhere.

“So, my fellow citizens, on this special day, I want to say that while I’m looking for a sugar daddy, a mother is love. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers in Cuba and around the world. Each of you is special. Enjoy your day,” he added.
