Texas Coach Critiques Ole Miss’ Academic Standards
Steve Sarkisian, head coach of the Texas Longhorns, has made some pointed remarks regarding Ole Miss. Following the tragic news of former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin’s death, Sarkisian spoke about the academic challenges faced by student-athletes transferring to Texas.
“At Texas, we only accept half of an athlete’s academic credit hours,” Sarkisian pointed out while addressing transfer rules. “You might be just one semester from graduating, but coming here means starting from 50 percent again. Ole Miss, however, has different standards. Want an easy degree? Just take basket weaving there.”
Sarkisian also expressed his concerns about the shift in focus within college football due to the transfer portal. “It feels like we’ve forgotten about academics. But, interestingly, less than 5 percent of these players will ever play in the NFL,” he remarked.
Earlier this week, Kiffin had addressed some controversial issues regarding Ole Miss during a talk with LSU’s coach. He mentioned that the lack of diversity at Ole Miss was impacting recruiting, stating players often said, “Hey, coach, we like you, but my grandparents aren’t comfortable with the idea of moving to Oxford, Mississippi.”
“Mention Baton Rouge, and that’s not what generally comes to mind,” he continued. “Parents have shared that the diversity on campuses is important and that they want their kids in environments that reflect the real world, where they feel there’s less racism.”
However, Kiffin later walked back his comments, apologizing for any offense caused. “I’m really sorry if this upset anyone at Ole Miss or Mississippi State,” he stated, emphasizing that he was simply outlining an ongoing recruiting challenge related to out-of-state families.
