Recent Arrests of Mexican Fugitives Highlight International Cooperation
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently confirmed that two fugitives from Mexico were apprehended, thanks to strong collaboration with Mexican law enforcement agencies. Border Patrol agents in the San Diego region conducted two separate sting operations, leading to the arrests of individuals wanted in Mexico for serious crimes, including kidnapping, extortion, and murder.
According to CBP, these arrests illustrate the effective partnership between Mexican authorities and U.S. Border Patrol agents in the San Diego area. The captures took place in late April and early May, with both individuals remaining unnamed by CBP. At the time of their arrests, both men were in the U.S. without legal status.
The first arrest happened on April 29 in El Cajon, California. Border Patrol agents located an illegal immigrant who was wanted for kidnapping and extortion charges in Mexico, acting on intel from foreign law enforcement. The fugitive, identified as a former law enforcement officer in Mexico, was taken into custody without any issues, as stated by CBP.
This individual is currently awaiting a release hearing. Following the hearing, he will be handed over to Mexico’s General Secretariat of the Republic (FGR), which is responsible for investigating and prosecuting federal offenses.
A second operation occurred a few days later, on May 5, in San Diego, where Border Patrol agents arrested another fugitive. This arrest followed an Interpol Red Notice, which is a global alert for law enforcement agencies to detain individuals wanted internationally for serious crimes. Investigators tracked down an undocumented immigrant whose visa had been revoked and who was suspected of murder in Mexico.
The investigation led agents to a residence in San Diego. After conducting surveillance, they were able to identify and arrest the second fugitive. He was promptly removed from the U.S. and returned to Mexican FGR officials at the San Diego port of entry, where he was charged with the crimes listed in his outstanding warrant.
Border Patrol Chief Justin M. de la Torre commented on the agents’ efforts in these operations, stating that “these arrests send a clear and unambiguous message” that the border is not a safe haven for individuals evading justice, and that there will be a relentless pursuit of those trying to escape accountability for serious crimes.
He further emphasized the vital nature of international enforcement cooperation, saying, “The extraordinary work of our dedicated investigators, coupled with important international partnerships, ensures dangerous fugitives are brought to justice, our communities are protected, and the rule of law is upheld. We take pride in these efforts and remain committed to safeguarding our citizens.”
