NYU Langone Health served with a subpoena regarding transgender surgeries for minors

NYU Langone Health Subpoenaed by Federal Grand Jury

NYU Langone Health has received a federal grand jury subpoena from the Department of Justice. This inquiry seeks information regarding the hospital network’s involvement in transgender surgeries for minors, a matter the DOJ has been investigating since 2020.

The New York hospital system announced this development on Monday. Reporting has surfaced from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Texas.

The subpoena specifically requests “information regarding patients under the age of 18 who received gender-affirming treatment” from 2020 through 2026, including the names of the staff involved in the treatment.

In a statement to the media, NYU Langone acknowledged that these developments could concern various stakeholders, including patients and healthcare providers. The hospital emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the privacy of health information while considering how to respond to the subpoena.

A spokesperson for NYU Langone College did not provide comments about the subpoena when asked by the media.

Earlier this year, NYU Langone suspended its transgender youth program, citing “the current regulatory environment.” This decision was made shortly after the Trump administration threatened to withdraw federal funding from the institution.

A representative explained, “Given the recent exit of our medical director along with the existing regulatory landscape, we felt it was necessary to end our Transgender Youth Health Program.” This choice has drawn criticism from New York State Attorney General Letitia James, who pressed NYU Langone to resume its services, warning of “further action” if they do not continue offering essential treatments for youth experiencing gender dysphoria.

James expressed concerns over NYU Langone’s abrupt cancellations of appointments for transgender minors, jeopardizing vital medical care for a vulnerable population.

In response, the Justice Department reinforced its support for NYU Langone, stating it will take necessary measures to protect the hospital from any punitive actions spearheaded by state authorities. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that the department cannot ignore attempts to compel actions detrimental to at-risk groups.

Former President Trump previously took significant steps to cut federal aid related to transgender surgeries soon after his inauguration, labeling the practice as a “dangerous trend.”

In a poignant moment, a New York University-trained surgeon expressed his internal conflict over young minors undergoing irreversible procedures. Dr. Ira Sabetsky, a father of three, shared his hesitation to voice concerns due to a prevailing atmosphere that suppresses dissent in medical circles like NYU Langone.
