Trump and Musk: A Complicated Reunion
In May 2025, a rift developed between President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, marking the end of their political alliance. Fast forward nearly a year, and Musk was spotted aboard Air Force One with Trump, flying to Beijing, hinting at a possible reconciliation.
The tension began when Musk distanced himself from the administration due to Trump’s ambitious One Big Beautiful Bill. Musk expressed profound disappointment over the bill’s hefty price and the reduction of funds from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Things escalated further when Musk accused Trump of playing a role in concealing details related to the Epstein case, which he broadcasted on social media (a now-deleted tweet).
After Trump’s claims about being implicated in the Epstein matter, Musk reached out to the president to apologize for a disparaging post. Musk mentioned, “I regret some of my posts about the president. They went too far,” indicating some remorse regarding his earlier comments.
Nonetheless, despite the public apology, Musk’s presence around Trump has diminished. They had not been seen together much post-feud, except for a brief appearance in September 2025 at a memorial service for Charlie Kirk.
Musk has continued to support certain Republican candidates and even stepped in to cover salaries for TSA employees when the Department of Homeland Security faced shutdown challenges. However, he has largely retreated from active political engagement until recently.
On Tuesday, Musk confirmed via social media that he was again accompanying Trump on Air Force One for the trip to China. They were among notable figures on the flight, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink. During this visit, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to engage in discussions regarding foreign policy, trade, and artificial intelligence amid ongoing tensions related to sanctions and rare earth exports. The executives on board appear to share a collective hope of securing business deals with China.
