Eugene Hanna, a 30-year-old rugby player from Auckland, New Zealand, has sadly passed away following injuries sustained during a match on May 2nd. He was a member of the Premier Reserve team of the Glenora Bears.

The injuries were categorized as “non-survivable,” although specifics haven’t been disclosed. After spending ten days in the hospital, he lost his battle.

Glenora Bears Chairman Janet Hunt expressed her sorrow in a statement shared on Facebook. She mentioned Hanna’s engagement with the team and noted the emotional impact of his loss on the community. “Eugene was injured in our first game against Te Atatu and did not make it,” she said.

Hunt conveyed her condolences to Hanna’s family, friends, and teammates, emphasizing the profound sadness felt by everyone involved. “Words cannot express the unimaginable loss,” she concluded.

Hanna excelled in sports beyond rugby, also playing soccer for the Renegades FC in the New Zealand Christian Football League. A heartfelt tribute from Renegades FC described him as “the heartbeat of the team,” noting his kindness and skill on the field.

New Zealand Rugby League released a statement addressing safety, specifically regarding head injuries and concussion protocols. They expressed their heartbreak over the incident and confirmed their commitment to player safety and welfare, insisting that measures are in place to prevent such tragedies.

The league encouraged players to seek medical advice following any head injuries and to return to play only when appropriately cleared.
