LSU’s New Coach Supported by Athletic Director Amid Controversy
Lane Kiffin, the head coach for LSU, has recently faced significant criticism from fans and media, largely stemming from his Vanity Fair interview. However, it seems he has at least one strong supporter in his corner: the Tigers’ athletic director, Virge Ausberry.
Ausberry defended Kiffin, pointing out shortcomings of former coach Brian Kelly, particularly regarding his lack of interaction with fans and boosters while in Baton Rouge. In an interview with USA Today, Ausberry stated that the program was in dire need of a new approach following Kelly’s departure.
“Going back to the Saban model,” he explained. “This means taking charge of the entire program. Engaging with alumni, interacting with boosters, and participating in fundraising efforts are essential. You have to be involved.”
While Ausberry didn’t name Kelly directly, his critique was pretty obvious. He elaborated on how Kiffin actively seeks out support from donors, encouraging them to connect and offering his personal phone number.
“He’s not someone who shuns contact or avoids interaction,” Ausberry remarked. “That’s what we had before. Our coaches were disconnected from the fans and the community.”
This blunt commentary from Ausberry is quite telling, especially in light of the limited success Kelly had during his time. LSU is known for being a prime destination for recruits due to its robust resources and enthusiastic supporters. Yet, Kelly’s recruiting classes didn’t match the performance of his predecessor, Ed Orgeron, whose average class ranking was notably higher.
If Kelly was indeed standoffish with supporters—something that aligns with his reputation—it’s no surprise he struggled in building the program’s talent pipeline.
College football, particularly in the SEC, thrives on financial backing, and donors are likely less inclined to contribute to a coach who can’t establish rapport. Kelly’s recruiting capabilities were also not particularly strong, which perhaps necessitated even more proactive support from donors than usual.
As for Kiffin, it’s early in his tenure, and the local atmosphere appears to be positive for now. However, results will need to follow quickly. Kiffin has proven instrumental in elevating Ole Miss’s recruiting efforts, and preliminary estimates suggest LSU’s roster is valued at around $40 million, indicating Ausberry’s strategy may be taking shape.
Nonetheless, social media feedback, especially from fans of Ole Miss, indicates a more skeptical view of Kiffin’s fit. Whether this is merely discontent or genuine concern remains uncertain.
As criticism mounts, it’s clear Ausberry is willing to defend Kiffin, but he may need to continue doing so as the season progresses.
