Yankees are waiting for the outcome of Max Fried's elbow MRI.

Max Fried’s Upcoming MRI a Concern for the Yankees

The Yankees have enjoyed a relatively injury-free start to the season, but that may change soon. After three weeks without significant issues, they’re facing a new challenge.

Max Fried is set to undergo an MRI on Thursday, and the results could greatly affect the team’s prospects. He left Wednesday’s game against the Orioles after only three innings, citing discomfort in his left elbow.

Fried expressed that he wasn’t overly concerned about the long-term implications but acknowledged that Thursday’s tests, performed by team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad, would provide clarity.

Even if the results are favorable, it seems unlikely he’ll be ready to pitch against the Blue Jays in the Bronx on Tuesday. Consequently, the Yankees might need to call up a spot starter until Gerrit Cole can return from the disabled list, which is expected by the end of the month.

Fortunately, the Yankees have a strong rotation that can manage Fried’s temporary absence. Elmer Rodriguez and Brendan Beck appear to be the primary candidates to fill the gap should Fried require time on injured reserve.

Rodriguez is scheduled to start on Saturday against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, having made two spot starts earlier this season. Beck pitched on Wednesday, so he will likely be available on Tuesday if required.

Both Rodriguez and Beck were optioned in the last 15 days and, as such, are only eligible to replace players on the injured list.

Fried’s situation adds to the Yankees’ growing list of injury concerns. In recent weeks, Giancarlo Stanton, Jason Dominguez, and Jose Caballero have all ended up on the injured list.

Caballero’s most recent setback was a fractured middle finger on his right hand sustained on Sunday. However, if he has his way, he hopes to be the quickest to return, with an estimated timeline of just ten days.
