Detroit Tigers announcers criticize MLB replay after overturned calls: 'This is going to get messy quickly'

Tigers Broadcaster Questions Replay Decisions

Tigers broadcaster Jason Benetti reacted with disbelief over some calls made by MLB’s replay office. During Thursday’s game, it was a surprising turn of events that seemed to confuse not just him but also color analyst Andy Dirks. The game ended with a 9-4 victory for the Mets, marking their third consecutive win.

As the game went on, Dirks pointed out, “This is going to get ugly in a hurry,” right after the home plate umpire announced the overturn of a fifth-inning call. It had already taken a turn for the worse in the fourth inning when Tigers manager AJ Hinch got into a heated exchange with the umpire and was subsequently ejected.

Benetti and Dirks were clearly frustrated. Benetti shared his thoughts, saying, “The Tigers have every reason to feel like something is off right now.” He recalled the first overturned call, describing it as “ridiculous,” adding that he wasn’t sure whether the evidence was substantial enough on the second one to overturn it, either. His statements hinted at a growing confusion regarding the ruling process.

Dirks chimed in, emphasizing, “If there wasn’t clear evidence for the last call, then what justified the first one?” Both were clearly puzzled about the inconsistencies in the rules and the discretion of the officials involved.

MLB offers a page on its site showing various angles of replay challenges. The Mets’ booth had also suggested that the Tigers’ runners were safe, but replay officials in New York disagreed. Benetti noted, “You’re the one making the call,” questioning the justification behind the decisions made.

Dirks pointed out an intriguing inconsistency: why was the fifth call handled differently compared to the fourth? He urged that MLB should find a way to provide clearer angles in real time for fans, suggesting, “You shouldn’t have to access replay archives every single night.”
