Golden Knights Move to Western Conference Finals Amid Controversial Penalties
The Las Vegas Golden Knights have made it to the Western Conference Finals, where they will take on the Colorado Avalanche. However, some recent developments might cast a shadow over their success.
Head coach John Tortorella finds himself in a tough position due to sanctions from the NHL, which stripped the team of draft picks. This stems from Tortorella’s choice to avoid speaking to the media following Game 6, where Las Vegas defeated the Anaheim Ducks 5-1.
After the game, Tortorella did not participate in the traditional handshake line and left media responsibilities unmet. Only players Brett Howden and Mitch Marner faced questions in the post-game press conference.
The NHL announced on Friday that the Golden Knights will forfeit their second-round pick in the upcoming 2026 draft. This penalty relates to a breach of media regulations during the playoff series against Anaheim. Additionally, Tortorella received a hefty fine of $100,000 for his actions.
The league’s statement highlighted prior warnings to the team regarding compliance issues, also mentioning that the Golden Knights have the option to appeal the penalties.
Such consequences seem rather extreme for a coach skipping post-game comments, but that’s the situation they’re facing now. It appears a costly misstep.
Following the announcement, the Golden Knights declined to comment further. Tortorella himself has not provided an explanation for missing the media duties or handshake.
Reports suggest that Tortorella was particularly upset over the suspension of defenseman Brayden McNabb, who missed Game 6 after a controversial play in Game 5 against Anaheim forward Ryan Poehling.
As the Western Conference Finals loom closer, it’s crucial to hear from Tortorella. He tends to be vocal, so a statement from him would be anticipated.
