Jazz Chisholm Jr. Embraces New Fashion for Success

It seems Jazz Chisholm Jr. might soon be borrowing his teammates’ pants.

Desperate to shake off the slump that plagued him for much of the first half of the season, Chisholm has opted for baggy shorts—first from Trent Grisham and now, as of Friday, from Giancarlo Stanton. And it seems to be working.

After a rough patch, Chisholm delivered one of his most promising performances in recent memory, garnering three hits and driving in three runs during the Yankees’ 5-2 victory over the Mets at Citi Field on Friday night.

He also reached base with a walk and even stole a base, marking the second time this season he reached base in the fourth inning. Admittedly, he did struggle when he got picked off at first, but the Yankees rebounded from their previous game against the Mets, tallying 10 hits.

“I’m talking about baggy pants,” Chisholm remarked with a shake of his head.

After a disappointing outing against the Orioles on Monday, where he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts (including key moments with runners in scoring position), Chisholm missed Tuesday’s match against left-hander Trevor Rogers. He returned on Wednesday sporting Grisham’s baggy pants and managed a double, which was the Yankees’ only hit that game.

On Friday, Chisholm kept the momentum going, achieving a 3-for-4 performance that included a double and two RBIs, despite initially having trouble finding Grisham’s pants and settling for Stanton’s instead.

“We marked that No. 13,” he commented regarding his jersey. “It’s not his pants anymore.”

Meanwhile, earlier this season in Houston, Chisholm wore Grisham’s baggy pants and batted 5-for-12 over three games, briefly breaking free from his early-season struggles. Unfortunately, that spark didn’t last, and he soon fell back into his slump.

Regardless of his quirky fashion choices, getting Chisholm back on track is crucial for the Yankees. Not just because he has 30-30 potential; he plays a vital role in the lower half of the batting order, which has seen its share of ups and downs. Coming into Friday’s game, he had a batting average of just .203 and an OPS of .607 through 43 games.

“Jazz is the man,” said Cam Schlitler, who delivered an impressive performance with one run in 6²/₃ innings. “Despite the rough start, he’s a fantastic player. It’s great to see him get some hits.”

Chisholm’s most significant hit came in the third inning when the Yankees strung together three consecutive doubles to take a 1-0 lead, and he added to that by hitting a double past first baseman Mark Vientos to extend the lead to 3-0. A walk in the fifth inning also led him to score on Spencer Jones’ RBI hit.

“I’m going to keep the same mindset of just trying to win, not focusing too much on myself,” Chisholm said. “I just need to help the team and secure victories.”
