OG Anunoby Prepares for Eastern Conference Finals
OG Anunoby appears to be gearing up for the Eastern Conference Finals.
He participated fully in practices for two consecutive days. While he’s not officially confirmed to play in Game 1 against either the Cavaliers or the Pistons on Tuesday, it seems likely that he will be available.
For starters, he’s sprinting again.
“I’m getting better every day,” Anunoby noted after a Saturday practice that involved full-contact drills. “I feel good today.”
A mild right hamstring strain sidelined him during the latter part of Game 2 in the Eastern Conference semifinal series against the 76ers. He was deemed questionable for the subsequent two games, ultimately not making an appearance in either match.
Fortunately for the Knicks, history seems to be on their side—this is a much better situation compared to two years ago when Anunoby left early during the second-round series against the Pacers due to a similar injury.
Back then, he strained his hamstring in Game 2 and attempted to return in Game 7, but his health was far from optimal. Fortunately, he experienced no such flashbacks this time.
“It certainly wasn’t what it used to be,” he remarked, “so I’m feeling better than before. I don’t dwell on the past; I focus on the present. When I got hurt this time, it didn’t feel as serious as my previous injury. I just try to improve every day.”
His return would greatly benefit the Knicks, even though they managed to defeat the 76ers by an impressive combined total of 44 points in his absence. Players like Landry Shamet and Miles McBride stepped up, but Anunoby is a notable game-changer on both offense and defense.
At the time of his injury, Anunoby was posting averages of 21.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.9 steals, and 1.1 blocks during the playoffs. He also boasted an impressive shooting percentage of 53.8 from three-point range, contributing to the Knicks outscoring opponents by 20 points per 100 possessions when he was on the floor.
“Facing these challenges at such a crucial time isn’t easy. A lot is at stake,” Coach Mike Brown commented. “It requires a bit of luck, skill, and a mostly healthy roster. We just hope everything stays on track as game time approaches.”
All things considered, the nine-day break after their sweeping win against the 76ers has proven to be advantageous, allowing Anunoby time to recover.
By the time Game 1 kicks off on Tuesday, he’ll have had around 12 days to recuperate.
“He’s back. He looks fine to me,” Mikal Bridges stated. “The crowd, fans, and media may have been more anxious, but I trust OG’s work ethic and know his physical state. I think he’ll manage just fine.”
