Redlands Police capture E-bike suspect after drone records his getaway

Electric Motorcycle Chase Ends with High-Tech Police Intervention

An electric motorcycle rider found out the hard way that escape is nearly impossible when drones are involved. This incident occurred in Southern California and has garnered quite a bit of attention.

The individual, whose identity hasn’t been revealed yet, rode their electric bike through town in a reckless manner, blowing past stop signs and even using the wrong side of the road as a shortcut. According to police statements, when they tried to stop the rider, he chose to “emit electrical gas and flee” instead.

In a clever move, authorities decided to utilize their drone technology to track down e-bike users who were evading them. Through the Department’s Mav-1DFR (Drone First Responder) program, this marked their first successful arrest using the drone.

Footage from the drone revealed police tracking the suspect from a height of 200 feet, observing as he attempted to stash his bicycle and hide in a nearby house.

As the police shared in their post, “Our eyes in the sky reached the scene, and we weren’t about to let this high-voltage chase end in a vanishing act.” The drone followed the suspect as he wove through various streets before ducking into someone’s residence.

Further drone footage captured police surrounding the house, successfully persuading the suspect that stepping outside and facing the consequences was the best course of action.

Eventually, the suspect was taken into custody, and the electric bike was impounded at a towing facility.

“Pro Tip: If you’re thinking of outsmarting the law, maybe don’t do it in a city where impressive drones are ready to respond from above. Redlands ensures your safety, sometimes from a rather elevated perspective,” the police department concluded in their post.

The newspaper has reached out to the Redlands Police Department for additional comments.
