The wife of incarcerated drug lord Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, Emma Coronel Aispuro, is working on improving her public image while her husband serves time in a high-security prison in Colorado.
This week, Coronel Aispuro, 36, engaged her Instagram followers by sharing a video of her gym workout in California, where she showcased her impressive pull-up skills.
Fans responded positively, cheering her on with comments like, “Go to the gym,” and “Come on, Emma.” One user even said, “I love you, Emma.”
Interestingly, her workout video appeared just hours after U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan dismissed Guzmán’s requests for a new trial and extradition to Mexico. It seems a bit coincidental, doesn’t it?
In his latest correspondence, dated April 28, Guzmán asserted that the Mexican government was responsible for all violent crimes and claimed, “I’m not harming anyone.” He had previously argued for his release from the Florence prison where he is serving a life sentence.
In a letter from April 20, he maintained that the trial verdict was unjust, suggesting that he hadn’t been given the opportunity to reasonably contest the case against him. He even sent a letter on April 10, complaining about the fairness of his trial and seeking family visitation rights.
Judge Cogan remarked that “some of these documents make no sense and have no legal value” in his ruling on Monday.
Coronel Aispuro didn’t respond to requests for comments. She pleaded guilty in June 2021 to charges including drug trafficking and money laundering, and was sentenced to three years in prison as part of a plea deal. After her sentence, she was transferred from a Texas prison to a facility in California, expecting to be released in September 2023.
It looks like she’s aiming for a personal comeback, having recently returned to modeling, making her debut at Milan Fashion Week in September 2024. Additionally, in March 2025, she launched a shapewear line with Mexican-American influencer Graciela Montes.
In December, a documentary titled “Married to El Chapo: Emma Coronel” aired, where she opened up about her marriage and the lengths she went to meet her husband while he was avoiding capture.
Coronel Aispuro shared, “Sometimes I had to drive out, go into the store, go out the back door and get in another car.” Quite a harrowing experience, I can imagine.
Moreover, she’s set to co-produce a bilingual television series about Guzmán, featuring perspectives including her own.
While she’s trying to rebuild her life, it seems Guzmán’s criminal empire might be facing internal challenges. Reports indicate that his two eldest sons, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, 42, and Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, 39, are considering surrendering to U.S. authorities. They might possess crucial information for prosecution against Sinaloa officials.
Meanwhile, their half-brothers Ovidio Guzmán López, 36, and Joaquín Guzmán López, 39, remain in U.S. custody. Joaquín is scheduled for sentencing on June 1st, and Ovidio’s hearing is on July 27th.
