Eli Manning: A dinner before the draft led to my change of heart about the Chargers

Eli Manning’s Pre-Draft Experience with the Chargers

Eli Manning left his pre-draft dinner with the Chargers feeling unsettled—though it had nothing to do with the food. In what could be considered one of the most revealing comments about his decision to avoid playing for the Chargers in 2004, Manning reflected on an uncomfortable atmosphere during a dinner with the team’s management.

“At that time, I didn’t sense they were the most motivated team to win,” Manning mentioned on the podcast “Bussin with the Boys.” He held head coach Marty Schottenheimer in high regard, noting, “He was a great guy. However, during my visit in New Orleans, there seemed to be tension between the head coach and the general manager. I remember them raising their voices—it felt like some sort of argument.” It certainly didn’t contribute to a promising environment.

He recalls being at a Marriott restaurant, where Schottenheimer expressed frustration over the location. “We’re in New Orleans, and we’re eating at a Marriott?” Manning said he could sense the anger in Schottenheimer’s voice. Clearly, there was no real consensus among the management about building a successful franchise.

For nearly two decades, Manning remained mostly silent about this pivotal moment. Ultimately, the Chargers selected him with the first overall pick, which led to some awkward interactions during the draft. Not long after, the Giants picked Philip Rivers at number four and arranged a trade involving both quarterbacks.

Eli’s father, Archie Manning, seemed quite enthusiastic about the choice, presumably hoping his son would land on a team with a proven record of success—something he himself missed out on during his time with the struggling Saints.

“My parents weren’t really on board,” Eli mentioned, adding that his dad was not a fan of the idea. Even with all the fallout, Archie stood firmly by his son, facing criticism that he was trying to dictate Eli’s career path. Instead of engaging with detractors, he chose to support Eli, saying, “This is what Eli wants.” He did his best to shield him from negative media attention.

This serves as a reminder for the upcoming year: any team aiming to draft Arch Manning, Eli’s nephew and Archie’s grandson, should ensure that all parties are aligned at the negotiation table.
