Giants bring John Richter on board from Texans as head of college scouting

The Giants’ College Scouting Department Gets a New Leader

The Giants have appointed John Richer from the Texans as the new director of college scouting, as confirmed on Saturday.

Previously a co-manager in Houston, Richer will now oversee his own department with the Giants, which is quite a step up.

This decision was largely driven by general manager Joe Schoen, suggesting he still holds considerable influence within the organization.

Interestingly, there’s some buzz about Schoen potentially being in the last year of his contract, raising questions about his job security, especially since head coach John Harbaugh answers directly to the owners. It’s kind of intriguing, really.

Shane, I mean, Schoen and Richer have worked together before in the Dolphins organization—so, there’s that connection. Richer also boasts a solid background, having six seasons with the Cardinals and eight with the Texans under his belt.

Since Schoen took charge in 2022 and subsequently let go of Chris Pettitte, the Giants have been without a direct college scouting director. In the interim, former Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey acted as a sort of stand-in for that role, along with national scouts Marcus Cooper and Jeremy Bright, who have been key players for a while now.

Dawn Aponte, the senior VP of football operations and strategy, also shares that Dolphins connection, having worked there alongside Schoen, Richer, and Hickey.

It does raise eyebrows, though—Harbaugh didn’t seem to hire anyone from the Ravens during his first few months in charge, which feels a bit unusual given the franchise’s history of nurturing high-level executives. Maybe he’s content with the scouting setup he inherited? Who knows.

Brandon Brown, the Assistant General Manager, recently mentioned how this operation is all about unity. He referred to the encouraging attitude among the staff, emphasizing the focus on the goal: winning games. It’s essential for everyone to set aside personal pride and collaborate effectively to bring in the right talent for match day.
