UAE denounces ‘unexpected terrorist assault’ following drone strike close to nuclear site

UAE Ministry of Defence Reports Drone Attack

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ministry of Defence has reported a drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. According to the Ministry, two out of three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that entered from the western border were intercepted, but one managed to hit an electrical generator situated outside the plant’s inner perimeter in the Al Dhafra Region.

“The United Arab Emirates has condemned in the strongest terms the unprovoked terrorist attack targeting an electricity generator,” stated the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).

No injuries were noted following the strike, and radiation levels remained unaffected. The Ministry emphasized that such attacks signify a dangerous escalation and an unacceptable act threatening national security.

Investigations are set to identify the origin of the drone attacks, with further information expected upon completion of inquiries. Meanwhile, the Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed that a fire resulting from the strike was addressed, reiterating that no injuries occurred and that safety levels at the plant were intact. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) also assured that all operational systems at the plant continued to function normally.

According to the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC), the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant supplies about 25% of the UAE’s electricity, representing the country’s largest power source.

The MoFA recently pointed out a series of attacks from Iran against the UAE, stating, “These unprovoked Iranian attacks and threats against the UAE and other regional nations have included nearly 3,000 missile and drone launches, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage.”

This escalation follows an American-Israeli operation against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury, which led to retaliatory strikes by Iran, raising concerns about the safety of civilian infrastructure in the region.

While the UAE Ministry did not explicitly link the recent attacks to any specific source, it condemned the targeting of a peaceful nuclear energy facility as a violation of international law, highlighting the risks posed to civilians and regional security.

“The UAE will not tolerate any threat to its security and sovereignty,” emphasized the Ministry. It further called for an immediate ceasefire and compliance with the cessation of hostilities.

A fragile ceasefire has existed between the U.S. and Iran since early April, but a lasting peace agreement remains elusive. President Donald Trump recently expressed on Truth Social that the urgency for a resolution is critical, warning Iran of dire consequences if no agreement is reached.

“For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” Trump proclaimed.
