Frightening events as military exercises reminiscent of 'Apocalypse Now' disturb Southern California — and what residents should anticipate next

This week, residents in Pasadena, Long Beach, and other parts of Los Angeles were startled by military helicopters, mock gunfire, and flash-bang grenades. It appears that these exercises might continue for a few years in Southern California.

Federal authorities have indicated that extensive tactical training could occur across the region for the next two years. This is in preparation for major upcoming events, such as the FIFA World Cup, the Super Bowl, and the Olympics.

Local residents in places like Pasadena, Irvine, and Long Beach were caught off guard by what seemed like late-night military drills.

FBI spokesperson Laura Eimiller noted that these exercises are part of routine preparedness efforts involving various federal, state, and local agencies.

Eimiller explained that the department regularly conducts training with specialized teams such as SWAT, bomb technicians, diving teams, and crisis negotiators. “With the FIFA games, Super Bowl, and Olympics approaching, there might be extra training with more partners,” she said.

One significant exercise occurred at the former St. Luke’s Medical Center in Pasadena. Authorities had to inform residents about the helicopter and tactical personnel presence due to the ongoing military-style scenarios.

As drills persisted, Long Beach and Industry officials warned residents of the potential for loud explosions overnight.

While some locals expressed dissatisfaction with the timing of the drills and the limited notice, federal officials argued that these preparations are crucial for hosting large international events.

Eimiller mentioned, “I think it’s reassuring for taxpayers to know we are training for any potential situations.”

In response to community feedback, the FBI is considering enhancing public outreach. They may start sharing notifications about increased training activities, especially in relation to the upcoming events.

Los Angeles is gearing up to welcome international visitors for the FIFA World Cup beginning June 11, continuing through July 19, alongside plans for the Super Bowl and Olympics.

Local leaders have sought more information on the exercises, as some cities received limited advance notice, prompting a surge in calls to city hall and police stations.

Some residents are left wondering if these drills indicate a shift in federal priorities, while others speculate about the potential for urban warfare scenarios. Last September, President Trump hinted at using urban locales for military training during a meeting with top military officials.
