Israel-UAE alliance mediated by the US faces challenges as tensions with Iran rise

Drone Attacks Generator at Nuclear Power Plant in UAE

Amid stalled negotiations with Iran, tensions have escalated, particularly between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Recently, a drone attack targeted a nuclear power plant in the UAE, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s scheduled meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as reported by chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst.

The strain within a US-backed alliance aimed at countering Iran has become evident. Analysts noted these tensions on Sunday, suggesting the risk of a broader conflict with Tehran is growing. This friction was first highlighted on May 13 when Netanyahu’s office claimed he had a significant meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during a secret visit. However, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs swiftly rejected this announcement, asserting that their relations with Israel are transparent and based solely on the Abraham Accords, with no hidden arrangements.

The UAE has expressed concerns about Iran’s actions, particularly regarding the Strait of Hormuz, an area critical to global trade.

“Our relations with Israel are public and established within the framework of the well-known and publicly proclaimed Abraham Accords,” the ministry stated, emphasizing that any claims of private arrangements lack credibility unless officially acknowledged by UAE authorities.

Analyst Natan Sachs commented on the situation, indicating that Israel might be making efforts to mend relations with the UAE, but uncertainty remains. The recent tensions with Iran were discussed during a call between Trump and Netanyahu, where they explored strategies, including potential military conflicts.

“This was a strange move because the UAE has been a close partner of Israel during this war,” Sachs noted. He suggested that Netanyahu’s handling of diplomatic matters might not have fully considered the implications for UAE relations.

Since the signing of the Abraham Accords in 2020, which normalized relations between Israel and several nations including the UAE, security cooperation has increased, largely driven by mutual concerns about Iranian military ambitions.

The recent drone attack underlined vulnerabilities in the UAE, which has faced numerous assaults from Iran. Israel’s air defense capabilities were reportedly deployed to assist the UAE in intercepting threats, yet the region remains on edge, with both sides contemplating their next moves amidst rising tensions.
