Keith Hernandez’s On-Air Blunder During Subway Series

It seems that some things are just not meant to be exchanged, especially during live broadcasts.

Legendary SNY announcer Keith Hernandez had an awkward moment while discussing Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. during the first inning of Sunday’s Subway Series game.

Chisholm’s amusing switcheroo of his first and last name has captured attention online, with many suggesting it might not be entirely appropriate for work.

“I’ll let Chazz Gisolm, Chisholm, win,” Hernandez quipped before Chisholm ended up striking out, ultimately contributing to the Mets’ 7-6 walk-off win in the 10th inning.

This isn’t the first time Hernandez has tripped over his words. He had a similar slip-up, oh, about three years ago, if memory serves me right.

The 72-year-old made his return to the SNY booth just recently after undergoing back surgery, which kept him sidelined for several weeks. Sunday marked his first game back at Citi Field.

Before this, he had rejoined for a road game against the Rockies on May 4 but hadn’t participated in the Mets’ recent home games, including last week’s outing against the Tigers.

On a side note, Apple TV covered the Mets’ loss to the Yankees on Friday night, while Fox had the rights to the Mets’ stunning win on Saturday.

Hernandez recounted his physical struggles recently: “It was causing all my sadness, the pain on the right side of my body. Literally, my right quad felt like a light switch went off, and I couldn’t muster any strength. The nerves were just shutting down.” He even mentioned having to crawl up the steps at times, which sounds pretty rough.

During the game on Sunday, the Mets managed to tie things up after a three-run deficit, thanks to Tyrone Taylor hitting a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning.

Then there was Carson Benge’s infield chopper, which snatched two points away from the Yankees, leading to one of the standout moments in what has otherwise been a challenging season for the Mets.

Hernandez’s slip added a touch of humor, typical of his career filled with memorable and funny remarks that have kept fans entertained on SNY.

Many regard the broadcasting trio of Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Hernandez as possibly the best booth in the business, which is quite the accolade.
