Sandy Fire Update in Simi Valley, California

The Sandy Fire near Simi Valley, California, is currently reported to be 5% contained, covering approximately 1,385 acres as of early Tuesday morning. A state of emergency has been declared in Ventura County.

“Firefighters are actively working towards full containment, and public safety personnel are coordinating efforts to allow residents to return to evacuated areas,” noted Ventura County Emergency Services.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire), crews worked through the night, showing little growth in the fire. Evacuation orders and warnings remain active as teams focus on protecting structures and reinforcing containment lines.

Firefighting helicopters have conducted water drops, benefiting from cooler temperatures and favorable weather conditions at night. Cal Fire is bracing for stronger winds expected later in the morning, which may increase the risk of flare-ups and further fire growth.

As of a late update on Monday, around 750 firefighters are engaged in battling the blaze, working to establish containment lines around the fire.

California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that the state has received federal assistance through the Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) to bolster firefighting efforts. This program, administered by FEMA, allows agencies to reimburse 75% of qualifying fire suppression expenditures.

The fire ignited shortly after 10 a.m. on Monday near Sandy Street, leading to the evacuation of thousands of homes.

“I encourage residents in affected areas to heed local officials’ advice as we mobilize resources to safeguard our communities,” Newsom posted on social media.

Several evacuation orders and advisories remain active across the region, including parts of Los Angeles County. Parents in the Simi Valley Unified School District have been informed that all schools will be closed on Tuesday.

The Ventura County Public Health Department has also issued a warning regarding unhealthy air quality due to the fire.
