Mayoral candidate criticized for handling of teen fight

Debate Erupts Over Youth Curfew After Brawls in D.C.

Following a violent clash among teenagers in Washington, D.C., criticism is mounting against a socialist mayoral candidate who mirrors New York’s Zoran Mamdani. This backlash comes due to his inadequate response to what many describe as “unchecked chaos” in the capital.

During a recent mayoral debate, candidate Janice Lewis George, who serves on the City Council, slammed the city’s youth curfew, labeling it a “dangerous” measure. Instead, as a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, she argued for the expansion of youth programs through centers and apprenticeships.

She pointed out that the real dangers for the youth, I think, stem from “federal troops” and “masked ICE agents” in the area.

“Using curfews as a tool for young people at this time is dangerous. We have federal troops in our cities, we have masked ICE officers enforcing laws, and they aren’t trained in de-escalation. They don’t have a responsibility to D.C. residents,” she stated.

She emphasized the importance of creating safer environments for the youth. “As mayor, I think it’s important to prioritize safety without putting them in harm’s way,” she explained.

In place of implementing a curfew, Lewis George proposed expanding youth employment programs and extending work hours. She mentioned, perhaps optimistically, that they could develop pathways to success through unions and apprenticeships.

Additionally, she pledged to increase access to childcare in the city and ensure families wouldn’t have to spend over 7 percent of their income on such services.

In contrast, Charles Fein Lehman from the Manhattan Institute expressed skepticism about her approach. In an email, he argued that public conduct issues arise from a lack of enforcement of established rules rather than service deficits. “What we need is stricter enforcement, not more permissiveness,” he remarked.

Lehman also observed that candidates like Lewis George and Mamdani are tapping into a moment of decreased violence in major cities, which has led to a newfound openness to their platforms focused on affordability. However, he cautioned that their proposed solutions, like publicly funded housing, might not effectively address the root issues.

In a disturbing incident over the weekend, video footage showed a brawl involving about eight young men at a Chipotle in the Navy Yard, where patrons sought safety in corners of the restaurant. The scuffle began around 8:40 p.m., according to local police.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced plans to hold parents accountable for the actions of their children involved in such disturbances. She stated that these teen takeovers have led to neighborhood disruptions and drained police resources away from residents.

“These incidents are becoming increasingly common, often resulting in assaults and other forms of disorderly conduct,” Pirro added.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman from Heritage Action criticized Lewis George, asserting that increased access to libraries and recreational areas won’t resolve the pressing issues of law and order the city faces.

Buhaira remarked that D.C. has long suffered from ineffective leadership, suggesting that President Trump’s efforts to clean the city should not be necessary. “Local leaders ought to address these issues, but socialism won’t fix them,” she concluded.

FOX News Digital has attempted to contact both Lewis George and Mamdani for their perspectives.
