Idaho Senator Jim Risch secures victory in the Republican primary for his fourth term

Sen. Jim Risch Advances in Idaho Primary

Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) has emerged victorious against two Republican challengers in the recent primary, moving closer to securing his fourth term in the Senate.

The 83-year-old senator achieved a comfortable win in Idaho’s Republican primary, as reported shortly after polls closed.

With an endorsement from former President Donald Trump, Risch has consistently shown strength in solidly Republican states during elections since 2016. He currently chairs the vital Senate Foreign Relations Committee, influencing key issues like the State Department and ambassadorial appointments.

This position has placed Risch at the center of significant Senate discussions, including those related to President Trump’s foreign policy regarding Iran and military actions in Venezuela, as well as ongoing arms sales to Israel.

First elected to the Senate in 2009, he previously served as both governor and lieutenant governor of Idaho. His race this election cycle is among more than a dozen Republican-held Senate seats deemed uncontested.

The current Senate composition sees Republicans holding a 53-47 majority. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York is strategizing to help Democrats flip four Republican-held seats in the upcoming November midterms.

On the Democratic side, real estate agent David Ross, who has previous statewide campaign experience, is set to challenge Risch. Another candidate, Todd Achilles, a former state representative, is running as an independent after resigning from the state House to enter the race against Risch.

It’s worth noting that Idaho has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in over 50 years.
