Al Roker joined in on the fun by donning a beret himself.
On Wednesday’s “Today” show, the weatherman playfully poked fun at John Travolta after the actor made waves for his colorful beret at the Cannes Film Festival last week.
Following an interview with Travolta and his daughter Ella, the show showcased a split screen featuring Travolta in a black beret and Roker sporting a white one.
“Al!” Travolta laughed upon seeing Roker wearing the beret.
When Travolta wished Roker “good luck,” Roker responded, “Hey, monsieur.”
He continued with, “It’s directed by an award-winning director. I love it!”
As they wrapped up the segment, Roker quipped, “What motivates me, John?”
Travolta was on “Today” to promote his directorial debut, “Propeller Night Bus,” inspired by his children’s novel from 1997.
At its premiere in Cannes last Friday, Travolta made a statement in a slouchy white beret and glasses, stirring up some debate about his choice of headwear.
Just the next day, he switched to a black beret and wire-rimmed glasses for a photocall, also wearing a brown beret paired with a matching jacket. He discussed it on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” just the following Tuesday.
Travolta spoke about the thought process behind his notable outfit in France. He remarked, “I said, ‘I’m making my directorial debut.’ If you search ‘directors and berets’ online, you’ll see directors throughout the last century who have worn berets.”
He added, “This time I’m not just an actor; I’m a director. So I wanted to present myself as a director.” It seemed simple, yet thoughtful.
At Cannes, he expressed that his beret would serve as a reminder of his experiences at the festival, recalling moments like winning the Palme d’Or and other significant memories alongside “Propeller Night Bus.”
He accepted the Cannes Honorary Palme d’Or—a lifetime achievement award—during the festival, standing beside Ella, who is featured in the film as a flight attendant. He fondly included Ella in this journey, remembering his late wife, Kelly Preston, who passed away from breast cancer in 2020.
