After facing significant pushback from local communities and environmental groups, Mexican officials have decided to reject Royal Caribbean’s proposal for a large water park along the Caribbean coast.
Opponents of the project expressed concerns that it could harm the delicate ecosystem and alter the character of the small coastal town of Mahahual.
During a press conference on May 19th, Alicia Bárcena, the Mexican Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources, provided details about the decision.
“We would like to inform you that Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day project will not be approved,” a source stated. They also mentioned that while the cruise line might consider withdrawing its proposal, it would not receive approval from SEMARNAT.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reinforced these worries during a Monday press conference, stating, “We must not do anything that will affect that area, where the ecological balance is very important, particularly for coral reefs.”
A representative for Royal Caribbean expressed their disappointment but acknowledged the importance of complying with Mexican environmental regulations. They stated, “Mahahual is a special place that deserves care and protection. We continue to believe in Mexico and remain optimistic about responsible investments.”
The company plans to re-engage with stakeholders to develop environmental infrastructure and create local job opportunities while supporting community initiatives.
Royal Caribbean initially introduced the Perfect Day Mexico project in October 2024, with an intended opening in 2027. The ambitious site in Mahahual would have included various attractions like a water park, pools, restaurants, and bars.
However, the decision to halt the development follows growing criticism and a Change.org petition that has amassed over 4.8 million signatures, demanding an end to the project. The petition argues that Mahahual is not an amusement park but a fishing community with a lifestyle closely tied to the sea.
The petition articulates concerns about protecting their rights to access the sea, beaches, and mangroves, emphasizing the importance of local identity and way of life.
Reactions from fans of Royal Caribbean on Reddit were mixed. Some cheered the decision, viewing it as beneficial for Mexico, while others expressed disappointment, recognizing valid concerns about environmental impact.
Interestingly, the proposed project was reminiscent of CocoCay in the Bahamas, which has successfully attracted millions of visitors each year, indicating the potential for such developments if managed sustainably.
Mahahual is known for its close proximity to the Mesoamerican Reef, an important destination for scuba divers and tourists eager to explore its vibrant marine life and coral arrays.
