Surprising Collaboration in the Watch World
In watch collecting circles, the term “Holy Trinity” refers to three of the most prestigious and historically significant brands: Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, and Audemars Piguet. Known for their unwavering quality, craftsmanship, and rich traditions, these brands often overshadow others, like Lange & Söhne and Breguet, even though those also produce exquisite timepieces.
So, I have to admit, I was a bit taken aback when I heard about a new project between Audemars Piguet and Swatch. Audemars Piguet, widely recognized for the iconic “Royal Oak,” is a brand cherished by collectors, yet these watches are notoriously hard to find in retail, typically requiring a strong relationship with a boutique to acquire one. On the other hand, Swatch is mostly known for its affordable watches, though it does own luxury brands like Breguet and Omega.
It’s an interesting contrast; a high-end brand known for $30,000-plus watches collaborating with a conglomerate that sells watches for just a few hundred dollars. Perhaps a match made in heaven?
In early May, the two companies unveiled their collaboration, the “Royal Pop.” This watch, rather than featuring the traditional understated stainless steel, bursts with vibrant colors. Crafted from Swatch’s bioceramic material, it takes on a pocket watch aesthetic with a strap attached.
With prices ranging from $400 to $425, the limited release on May 16 was anticipated to draw considerable attention. And wow, did it ever!
Despite various claims about the state of the U.S. economy from experts and media outlets, there was a clear demand for these $400 watches. People swarmed from across the country to get their hands on the Royal Pop. In fact, Swatch even announced on Saturday that many stores would close for safety reasons due to the overwhelming crowds.
On Long Island, a chaotic scene unfolded at Roosevelt Field Mall, resembling a mob as local police were called in for crowd control. It was reported that officers resorted to using pepper spray to manage the situation.
Four arrests were made, including charges of second-degree assault. In total, 19 Swatch stores closed for safety precautions on Sunday. The scene in Soho was so rowdy on Saturday that the store couldn’t even open its doors to sell watches.
Interestingly, many of those lining up were hoping to resell their Royal Pops, with some listings on eBay reaching between $1,600 and $2,000. It raises a question: if the economy is as dire as we hear daily, why are so many willing to queue for a watch priced at $400 or more? Or perhaps there exists a significant crowd ready to pay $2,000 for a watch that initially costs $400 but isn’t accessible for wearing just yet.
The AP x Swatch “Royal Pop” offers a notable chance for collectors and enthusiasts to acquire a piece associated with the Holy Trinity for a fraction of what similar watches would typically cost. It seems like a steal, yet the large turnout for this collaboration might indicate that not everything is as bleak as it may appear.
