Jason Kidd speaks out following unexpected firing from the Mavericks

Jason Kidd Reflects on His Time with the Mavericks

After parting ways with the Dallas Mavericks, Jason Kidd has shared his thoughts. In a heartfelt social media post, he expressed gratitude to the team, players, and fans from his five-season tenure.

Kidd reflected, “The past five years in Dallas have meant more to my family and me than words can express.” He continued, thanking the players for their dedication and for the challenges they faced together. “I am proud of what we have built and how we competed consistently,” he noted.

He also thanked the fans for their unwavering support, saying, “Your energy and loyalty make Dallas a truly special place in sports.” Additionally, he expressed appreciation for the city’s warm welcome, adding that the friendships formed there would be cherished.

Concluding his statement, Kidd mentioned he was departing the Mavericks with “nothing but gratitude and respect for everyone who has been a part of this journey.”

This week, the Mavericks announced a “mutual agreement” to part ways with Kidd, despite having four years and over $40 million left on his contract. New president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri commented that a new direction was necessary for the franchise.

Ujiri stated, “We believe now is the right time to set a new direction for our team.” He emphasized the team’s ambition to consistently compete for championships and mentioned that they are actively searching for a new head coach.

Under Kidd’s leadership, the Mavericks reached the NBA Finals in 2024 and the Western Conference Finals in 2022. However, his overall record was balanced at 205 wins and 205 losses during his tenure.

This past season saw notable changes for the Mavericks, including Luka Doncic’s controversial move to the Lakers and a dismal 26-56 record. Kidd previously coached the Nets and the Bucks before his role with Dallas, and he is already being considered for other coaching positions, including potential interest from the Magic, who are in the market for an experienced head coach.
