Sen. Bernie Sanders Responds to Controversy Surrounding Graham Platner
Senator Bernie Sanders confronted a reporter from Fox News Digital during a Capitol building walkthrough, urging him to “do a better job” when discussing the resurfaced Reddit posts of Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner.
It’s worth noting that Sanders endorsed Platner back in August of 2025.
Meanwhile, several Democratic senators have remained tight-lipped regarding the implications of these posts on their Senate campaigns. Some admitted they hadn’t seen the posts, while others simply declined to comment.
Democratic Senators Choose Not to Comment
For instance, Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut said, “I’ve never seen it. I’m not following you. Sorry.” On the other hand, Senator Angus King of Maine stated, “I’m not going to take any position in that election,” a stance he’s maintained throughout his tenure. Senator Maisie Hirono from Hawaii echoed the sentiment, asking, “To whom?” when pressed about commenting on Platner’s situation.
Senator Jeff Merkley from Oregon mentioned that the voters of Maine should ultimately decide on Platner’s candidacy, emphasizing that “the people of Maine can choose who they want to represent them in the United States Senate.”
“I haven’t seen his posts, so I can’t be in a position to judge,” he added.
Controversial Reddit Posts Resurface
Platner has come under fire as deleted Reddit posts from his past have re-emerged, featuring some disturbing content—like comments on inappropriate behaviors in portable toilets and disrespectful jokes about injured American soldiers. Previous posts also revealed views that called for accountability regarding rape victims and even praised Hamas tactics.
One resurfaced post controversially stated, “I still have to masturbate every time I sit in Portas — erm… the smell of that blue water conditioned me.”
In his defense, Platner has explained that these posts were created during a challenging time in his life, stemming from his military service and struggles with PTSD after serving multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Platner confirmed ownership of the Reddit account P-Hustle, which contains a hefty archive of over 2,000 posts dating back to 2009. His earlier remarks on this issue included an acknowledgment of his past and an appeal for understanding of his evolution over time. “He’s talked about his history, his evolution, his war-related PTSD, but I think it’s still a decision for the people of Maine to make,” Merkley concluded.
