ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND DEPORTATION TRENDS UNDER TRUMP

In the first year of President Donald Trump’s administration, over 3 million undocumented immigrants reportedly left the United States, including about 2.2 million estimated “self-deportations,” according to information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This data was presented to Fox News Digital, highlighting a sharp shift in immigration patterns, particularly when compared to the record influx of illegal immigrants under previous leadership.

A spokesperson from DHS mentioned to Fox News Digital that nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants were deported and another 900,000 were arrested by May 17, framing these figures as indications of the impact of Trump’s strict immigration policies.

Interestingly, the administration has been promoting a voluntary deportation program through the CBP Home app, which offers migrants travel assistance as well as financial support to facilitate their departure from the country.

DHS argues that this voluntary program is significantly less costly than traditional deportation processes, aiming to encourage those who are in the country illegally to leave willingly. These claims about voluntary deportations seem to align with what the government has recently reported regarding a substantial decline in illegal border crossings. This shift, they say, marks an end to the so-called “catch-and-release” policy.

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced last week that it has been an entire year since Border Patrol last released illegal immigrants into the U.S. interior after their apprehension at the border. In April alone, apprehensions at the southern border dropped by over 90% compared to the previous year, according to the CBP.

Figures from Border Patrol indicate 8,943 arrests at the Southwest border last month, a stark contrast to the monthly averages observed during the Biden administration and markedly lower than the peak numbers recorded in December 2023. Secretary of Homeland Security Mark Wayne Mullin noted that the previous practices of catch-and-release are no longer in effect. He suggested that the enforcement policies currently in place are dissuading illegal immigration.

The administration also points to increased ICE operations, stricter limitations on asylum claims, and broader domestic enforcement actions as factors creating a significant deterrent impact. Still, it’s worth noting that immigration analysts acknowledge the reduction in illegal immigration due to these tougher stances, though some critics raise concerns about how DHS portrays data related to immigrant releases and deportations.
