Drone Show Over Los Angeles Causes Mixed Reactions
Recently, Los Angeles residents experienced a range of emotions while looking skyward, as a striking image hovered over the city. For roughly ten minutes, some watched in awe, while others felt a bit uneasy.
That haunting image, resembling a skeleton with glowing red eyes, was a promotion for Amazon’s upcoming film, Masters of the Universe. The company organized an extravagant drone display that set a Guinness World Record.
In anticipation of the movie’s release on June 5th, a large projection featuring imagery that could pass for an apocalyptic scene was shown. If locals happened to glance up at just the right moment, they could see Skeletor looming over them.
However, the event itself wasn’t entirely frightening. The ten-minute show included various elements such as the film’s title screen, Castle Grayskull, and the iconic theme music, all surrounding characters that, while eerie, are part of a beloved franchise.
Travis Knight, the film’s director, confirmed that Amazon MGM Studios was awarded the Guinness certificate for producing the brightest aerial image made by a drone.
The show utilized 1,600 drones, but this number didn’t surpass the Guinness World Record for the most drones flown simultaneously from a single computer, which currently belongs to a company in China that managed to orchestrate 22,580 drones during a presentation in 2026.
While some spectators expressed concern about the potential hazards of such a massive aerial display, fearing what might happen if something went wrong, others commented on its aesthetics. One viewer speculated, “What if it falls down everywhere during the show?”
Another remarked, “It looks fantastic, but I wouldn’t want to live in that area,” suggesting that while the display was impressive, it brought a sense of unease.
Several reactions were tinged with skepticism. Some viewers noted that the show didn’t really catch anyone off guard, with one saying, “A skeleton character, reminiscent of the Grim Reaper, looking over Hollywood – who could be shocked?”
Amidst all this, there is a growing sentiment that regardless of such grand marketing efforts, the film industry is facing significant challenges. Many voiced thoughts that studios need to “make better movies,” hinting at their worries about the current state of cinema.
