New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani’s Twitch Debut
Mayor Zoran Mamdani of New York City highlighted a noticeable generational gap during his debut on Twitch, aiming to engage with Gen Z voters. He openly admitted to never having played Minecraft, struggled with internet slang, and seemed out of touch with modern rap culture.
During the livestream, which is also available on other social media platforms, it was noted that chat rooms were inundated with spam and explicit messages, causing some viewers to question the lack of moderators.
When asked about his experience with the widely popular video game “Minecraft,” he revealed, “The reason I sound so old is because to me, I knew Minecraft was a movie based on a video game.”
The disconnect became even clearer when he was pushed to name a favorite “underground” rapper. Mamdani felt “a little washed out” mentioning Canadian artists from the early 2000s, like k-os and K’naan, but found his younger co-host “Moose,” a popular pro-Palestinian TikTok creator, unfamiliar with those names.
Twitch has an impressive user base, with over 240 million active users each month, 72% of whom are younger than 34, according to reports.
Mamdani’s progressive policies include a plan to address the fiscal challenges he inherited, successfully eliminating a $12 billion budget deficit by implementing a “pied-à-terre” tax on non-residents owning secondary homes valued above $5 million. He intends to increase income taxes by 2% for those making over $1 million annually and impose additional taxes on the very wealthy to support a $1.2 billion Universal Child Initiative.
Despite the cultural disparities evident during his Twitch stream, Mamdani remained committed to his democratic socialist ideals. Throughout the broadcast, his co-host, “Moose,” guided him on internet norms, correcting him on how to address the audience and explaining terms like “bussin,” which indicates something good or impressive.
In addition to discussing policy, Mamdani promoted various city initiatives, including a lottery for New York residents to purchase 1,000 World Cup tickets at $50 each, which also includes free bus transportation. This is tied to a broader goal of making public transportation in the city more accessible and efficient.
Citing recent severe flooding in the city, he emphasized the “climate crisis” and mentioned a substantial investment in “cloudburst technology” aimed at improving city infrastructure for sudden downpours.
The livestream was styled as a tribute to former Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who famously connected with New Yorkers through his radio show “Talk to the People.”
Following the event, Mamdani’s office shared the recording on X, declaring him the first elected official to establish a regular multi-platform interactive streaming series. As of now, there has been no response from his office regarding feedback on the livestream or information about future episodes.
