Jalen Brunson Shines in Knicks Playoff Victory
On Tuesday, Jalen Brunson was determined to prevent a loss for the Knicks, leading an impressive franchise-record comeback with a 22-point rally in the fourth quarter.
Just two days later, he showed versatility against the Cavaliers, who tried to limit his scoring opportunities. Instead of another 30-point outing, Brunson stepped up with a playoff career-high of 14 assists, helping the Knicks secure a solid 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.
“It shows he’s playing the right way,” noted Mikal Bridges following the Knicks’ 109-93 victory at Madison Square Garden. “If a double team doesn’t come, that’s to his advantage. When he faces a double team, he finds the open man. Ever since I’ve known him, he’s always played the right way.” It’s clear he has a knack for making smart plays.
Brunson only had two points in the first quarter, ultimately finishing with 19, which is, surprisingly, among his lowest playoff totals. Yet, he was instrumental in facilitating his teammates’ scoring, effectively getting the ball to them at crucial moments.
“Even with them sending two guys at me, I was still able to find my teammates,” Brunson shared. “It’s all about creating opportunities and trusting them to make the plays.”
Coach Mike Brown remarked, “They double-team him, yet he still managed 14 assists. He did what was needed.” This adaptability is what sets him apart.
A standout moment came with former Villanova teammate Josh Hart, who faced challenges after being benched in Game 1. Brunson consistently sought him out, highlighting Hart on a fast break before he made a powerful dunk. This moment not only showed support but also helped Hart regain his confidence, ultimately scoring a team-high 26 points.
Brunson humorously mentioned, “I’m not really hunting for him; he just ends up being open.” He then became more serious, adding, “I have a lot of faith in him. I see how hard he works after practice; he’s dedicated.” Clearly, their bond runs deep, and their teamwork shines brightly on the court.
