Florida Man Loses Wife in Dog Attack
A Florida man is grieving the death of his wife, who was tragically killed by a neighbor’s dog.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office has announced that they are investigating the woman’s death following the brutal attack on Tuesday.
“To see the same woman you’ve loved for the last 30, 25 years torn apart by just two animals…you just can’t get that image out of your head,” Donnell Smith shared.
He recounted that he had gone to assist a neighbor around 1 a.m. When he returned home, his wife, Jodi Cowan, and their dog were missing.
He then heard distant cries for help, leading him to see his wife being pulled away. “I saw the two dogs drag my wife onto the road and fall into the grass in front of the truck,” Smith recalled, tears streaming down his face.
Finding her in a pool of blood, he witnessed the dogs return, attempting to take her away again. “I pulled out the knife and tried to stop her bleeding by swinging it with one hand and holding the blood with my other hand,” he said.
Smith managed to call 911, but despite being rushed to the hospital, his wife passed away a few hours later.
“It was a brutal thing. To see the same woman you’ve loved for the last 30, 25 years torn apart by just two animals… that image will haunt you,” he added, reflecting on the horror of that night.
He speculated that she may have gone outside to protect their dog, potentially sacrificing herself in the process.
Smith mentioned that the dog, which belonged to a neighbor, had previously been reported to the sheriff’s office for aggressive behavior.
“I told them she has two holes that she always breaks out of and runs around the neighborhood and is aggressive towards people, but they didn’t do anything about it,” Smith stated. “My wife died because of it.”
The sheriff’s department was contacted to determine if any complaints had been lodged against the dog before this incident. Officials promised to provide updates as the investigation continues.
