Americans Seeking Affordable Living Relocate to Lower-Tax Countries
A recent study highlights that financially constrained Americans are increasingly moving to smaller countries known for their lower taxes and more manageable living costs.
According to an international insurance firm, over 180,000 Americans may be compelled to relocate in 2025 due to remote work trends and rising expenses. The study identifies Panama as the top destination for those in search of financial independence.
Panama scored 7.01 in the report, which evaluated various factors such as taxes, take-home pay, airfare prices, real estate costs, utility expenses, and typical monthly salaries. It stands out for its appealing mix of low taxes and affordable living.
In terms of real estate, prices average about $219 per square foot, while renting a one-bedroom apartment is around $879 per month. Utilities add another approximately $112 to monthly expenses.
Although the average monthly salary in Panama is about $862, lower living costs mean that expats can stretch their income further.
Bahrain, with no personal income tax and higher salaries, comes in second with a score of 6.93. Located in the Persian Gulf, this archipelago features 33 islands.
Real estate averages $203 per square foot, and rent for a one-bedroom apartment is roughly $743 per month, ranking among the lowest in the top 10. Utility costs average around $132, with the monthly living cost per person estimated at $820.
What’s notable about Bahrain is its salaries, with an average take-home pay of about $2,256 monthly, giving expatriates significant purchasing power compared to many other tax-friendly destinations.
Andorra, nestled between France and Spain, takes third place with a score of 6.67, attributed to its low underground taxes.
Real estate prices are around $501 per square foot, and renting a one-bedroom apartment costs about $1,157. Notably, take-home pay can exceed $3,017 monthly, making it one of the higher-paying countries globally.
Completing the top five are Mauritius, noted for its political stability and quality of life, and Qatar, recognized for its high earning potential and tax-free salaries.
Other countries that made the top 10 list include Malta, Cyprus, Seychelles, the United Arab Emirates, and Ireland. It appears there are options for those willing to explore.
