Mexico’s second-highest official became the subject of much amusement after showing up late to a crucial cabinet meeting, struggling to dismount his motorcycle and hurriedly running inside while removing his pink helmet.
A video capturing the event quickly went viral and was featured on various news outlets, highlighting Mexican Interior Secretary Rosa Isela Rodríguez’s unconventional arrival.
The meeting took place just after U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayn Marin arrived in Mexico to talk with President Claudia Sheinbaum. Their discussions centered around mounting tensions regarding the Mexican government’s efforts to adhere to President Trump’s directives aimed at tackling drug cartels.
Sheinbaum asserted that the discussions were productive, claiming they enhanced relations between the two countries.
However, these conversations coincided with rising tensions over Sheinbaum’s defense of Sinaloa Governor Ruben Rocha Moya and his associates, who are wanted in the U.S. for allegedly conspiring to traffic drugs. Reports indicate that Sheinbaum insists there’s no proof of Rocha Moya’s misconduct while actively trying to prevent his arrest, even as two of his associates have already turned themselves over to U.S. authorities.
Speculation surrounds the U.S. government’s intention to charge other Mexican officials linked to the cartel, including several governors, mainly from Sheinbaum’s MORENA party. This has brewed additional tensions, prompting Sheinbaum to instigate a situation involving American agents operating in Mexico and to publicly address Mexican officials who had worked with them.
