You Can Now Purchase Bitcoin, XRP, and More in ChatGPT Through MoonPay

Simply put

  • MoonPay has introduced a ChatGPT app that enables users to create cryptocurrency purchase links through an OpenAI chatbot.
  • Prior to buying cryptocurrencies, users need to undergo MoonPay’s standard KYC and checkout procedures.
  • According to MoonPay, AI assistants like ChatGPT are emerging as a new distribution channel for cryptocurrency services.

MoonPay has made it possible for users to buy cryptocurrencies directly within ChatGPT, allowing them to generate checkout links for digital assets such as Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, and USDC without leaving the OpenAI platform.

On Friday, MoonPay launched its new ChatGPT app, designed for purchasing cryptocurrencies directly within the OpenAI chatbot. This places MoonPay alongside a growing number of crypto-related apps available on ChatGPT, which also includes services like Kraken and OKX.

While other ChatGPT store apps focus on providing blockchain data and price inquiries, MoonPay’s app facilitates actual cryptocurrency purchases and aims to inform users in the process.

“We’ve seen this trend in commerce and AI where users often get shopping recommendations from ChatGPT,” noted Kevin Ariffin, a Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead at MoonPay. “I was somewhat surprised that there wasn’t an option to buy cryptocurrencies through ChatGPT.”

In the app, users can inquire about their favorite cryptocurrencies and instruct the chatbot to purchase a certain amount. ChatGPT will then create a MoonPay checkout link that leads users to the MoonPay site, integrating them with their wallet through the KYC process.

“It’s like having a broker who assists you in understanding the asset you want to acquire, without making any financial recommendations. Right now, we’re just offering a checkout link, similar to Shopify, but eventually, we envision ChatGPT and similar models doing much more,” Ariffin explained.

Furthermore, if a user has already completed the KYC verification while setting up a MoonPay account, they won’t need to go through that again.

“Just log into your existing MoonPay account,” he added. “You’ll see that you’re logged in, you’ll use your previous payment method, and your order will be sent to your designated address.”

This ChatGPT app is part of MoonPay’s larger strategy to enhance AI-driven encryption tools.

This month, MoonPay also acquired AI trading startup Dawn Labs and unveiled Dawn CLI, a trading co-pilot that converts plain English instructions into automated market strategies. Recently, they introduced the MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard enabling AI agents to utilize stablecoins from online merchant crypto wallets.

Ariffin emphasized that the app’s goal is to educate everyday users about how cryptocurrencies function through dialogue, not to facilitate automatic AI trading.

“The ability to converse on ChatGPT holds significant potential,” he remarked. “It feels like a crucial piece that’s currently missing.”

Despite the convenience that the app offers, Ariffin pointed out that users confined to ChatGPT are somewhat limited to what OpenAI has built into their ecosystem. This leads to the idea that emerging AI clients like OpenClaw and Hermise, where AI agents operate locally, will play a critical role moving forward.

According to Ariffin, platforms like ChatGPT are becoming increasingly important gateways for cryptocurrency adoption.

“These apps, whether it’s ChatGPT or Claude, act like a new entry point to the internet,” stated Ariffin. “People are not just conducting a simple Google search; they’re digging deeper to really grasp what they’re getting involved with.”
