Wahlberg Shares Grill Tips for Memorial Day
As Memorial Day approaches, many Americans are gearing up to fire up their grills. Paul Wahlberg, the executive chef of Wahlburgers, believes that the best burgers are often the simplest ones. For him, this holiday brings back memories of summer cookouts with his family in Massachusetts.
“My father was, you know, a typical dad,” Wahlberg recalled. “He cooked for us all year long, but during the summer, he took charge of the grill. We’d make burgers in the backyard and just hang out, waiting for them to cook. That’s how it was.” These backyard gatherings were the inspiration behind the Wahlburger chain he started with his brothers, Mark and Donnie, back in 2011.
Wahlberg views burgers as “a true summer meal, especially at home.” As the unofficial start of summer kicks off, he has shared some straightforward tips for grilling burgers, emphasizing the importance of using “really high-quality beef.”
When it comes to toppings, Wahlberg identifies as “an American burger guy.” He enjoys lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, and their signature Wahl sauce. “What’s great about hamburgers is that they’re versatile—you can make them your own,” he noted.
He suggests keeping things simple when grilling. “Sometimes less is more,” he pointed out. “Simpler is always better.” This straightforward approach is part of what keeps hamburgers a long-standing favorite in American cuisine—easy to customize and perfect for gathering friends and family.
Wahlberg explained that, historically, it all begins with a hamburger and a hot dog. He acknowledges there’s a strong emotional bond with food, especially during holidays and family get-togethers. “Food can put you in a specific time and place in life,” he said. The best compliment, he believes, is when someone remarks that a dish tastes just like what mom or dad used to make.
Looking ahead to the Memorial Day festivities, Wahlberg reminded us that it’s also a time for remembrance—celebrating those who have contributed to our country and the joy of gathering with loved ones.
