Cruise buffet diners encounter unexpected fees for bringing food to their rooms

Cruise lines are advising passengers against taking buffet food back to their cabins, with some even enforcing fines for those who do.

Costa Cruises, part of Carnival Corporation, recently informed guests that they could incur a cleaning fee of 60 euros (around $70) if they bring buffet food to their rooms, as reported by the cruise blog Crew Center.

The company’s representative emphasized that the health and safety of travelers is a primary concern. They mentioned, “We shared onboard communications on selected sailings as a precautionary measure, encouraging customers to act responsibly.”

Furthermore, the report from Crew Center highlighted that only trained room service staff are permitted to deliver food to guest cabins. The guidelines strictly state, “All food must be eaten in designated dining areas.”

Costa Cruises operates from Genoa, Italy and provides services across the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and South America.

In light of this policy, passengers have been engaging in discussions on social media. One comment reflected understanding, noting, “I get why they implement rules; I just don’t want to see plates or cups left in the hallways. Just eat in the food area!”

Another passenger added, “I’m not blaming the cruise line… but if you’re taking food from the buffet, at least return your dirty dishes properly.”

In contrast, some expressed their intent to disregard fines, with one user stating, “There’s no way I’d pay that fine. I’ll just take food back and enjoy breakfast in bed.”

Meanwhile, another passenger shared, “We love grabbing food and coffee to savor on our quiet balcony,” while someone else remarked that cruise lines should focus on more pressing issues rather than imposing extra charges.
