Conservatives Need to Take Back American Education Right Away

Concerns Over Ideological Intolerance in Schools

For many years, it was believed that American schools aimed to broaden students’ horizons, promote discussion, and foster independent thinking. However, the current reality often seems to lean in the opposite direction.

Too frequently, conservative opinions are dismissed, disinvited, or outright silenced by radical activists and administrators who prioritize appeasing the far-left over upholding free speech. A recent incident in South Carolina highlights this troubling trend.

Lt. Governor Pamela Evette, a prominent businesswoman and staunch supporter of former President Trump, was excluded from delivering the commencement speech at South Carolina State University after activists protested her political stance. Officials at the university cited concerns for safety, but it appears the more pressing issue was a lack of tolerance for differing perspectives.

Conservative ideas have found little room in the current educational environment.

From elite universities to public institutions and even K-12 schools, it seems activists increasingly dictate who gets to speak, which ideas are deemed acceptable, and what students can learn.

Administrators often capitulate to leftist pressures, considering conservatives threats rather than contributors to healthy debate. This scenario ought to worry everyone.

Our educational system has strayed significantly from its foundational goals. Rather than nurturing critical thinking, schools now often dictate what students should think. Activism has overshadowed genuine scholarship, and intellectual diversity has given way to ideological homogeneity. And taxpayers are footing the bill.

This calls for change that goes beyond superficial adjustments. What we need is a fundamental shift.

Firstly, tenure at publicly funded colleges should be reevaluated.

Originally meant to safeguard academic freedom, tenure has increasingly shielded ideological activists from accountability, transforming classrooms into platforms for political discussions that are often disconnected from education.

After the assassination of conservative speaker Charlie Kirk last year, some academics openly celebrated political violence against him. Such reactions reveal the alarming radicalization within sections of academia.

Evette has rightly suggested ending tenure because employment in education should be based on merit and professionalism, rather than permanent job security.

Secondly, there’s a pressing need for schools to refocus on education instead of indoctrination.

Parents want their children to learn the basics—reading, writing, math, science, history, and how to think critically. They don’t enroll their kids to be engulfed in divisive politics or politically charged ideology.

Students should finish school with a clear understanding of the principles shaping the nation, equipped to think for themselves and engage with differing viewpoints.

Lastly, real authority over education should rest with parents.

For far too long, bureaucracies and special interests have confined families to underperforming schools. Every family deserves the right to choose the educational path that best suits their child—whether that be public, charter, private, technical, or homeschool.

Choice fosters accountability, and competition spurs improvement. Parents should, quite simply, be the ones making these decisions, not government figures.

This isn’t a challenge exclusive to South Carolina; it’s a nationwide issue.

We urgently need conservative leaders like Lt. Governor Evette to tackle these problems head-on. She clearly understands what’s at stake and has always pushed for parental rights, accountability, school choice, and a focus on genuine education over activism.

If we don’t act to reclaim our schools and universities now, the repercussions will ripple far beyond classrooms.
