Tragic Accident in South Carolina Restaurant
A woman lost her life in an unfortunate incident involving a restaurant umbrella over the weekend in a quaint lakeside town in South Carolina.
Dana Weinger, aged 56, was out with her husband and family at the Driftwood Grill Home of the Lazy Gator on Lake Marion in Somerton when a powerful gust of wind turned the umbrella into a projectile. This gust was described as significant enough to cause chaos, as it not only lifted the umbrella but also scattered other furniture and debris.
According to Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley, the flying umbrella struck Weinger in the neck, tragically severing her carotid artery. Paramedics arrived quickly, but by the time they got there, Weinger was unresponsive and unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene.
Clarendon County Coroner Jacqueline Blackwell commented on the erratic nature of the accident, emphasizing that such events are far from common. “This is just one of those tragic things that happens,” she noted. She described the intensity of the wind as something akin to a microburst, which dangerously affected the area.
Blackwell also pointed out the emotional state of Weinger’s husband and family, who were present during this devastating event. The restaurant’s owners expressed their condolences and gratitude towards first responders, stating, “Our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones affected by last night’s tragic incident.” They recognized the overwhelming impact this has had on everyone involved, including staff and guests.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Driftwood Grill has been proactive in supporting the community by collaborating with local authorities to offer grief counseling for both their staff and those impacted. This moment serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly situations can escalate and change lives forever.
